Week 5
Day 29 El Questro
Wow the start of week five!!!
This morning we went for a swim at the Zebedee Springs!!! They are hot springs and oh they are fabulous. It is just magnificent. We stayed for about 1.5hours. Perfect way to spend a morning.
After lunch we ventured to El Questro gorge! WOW!!! On the way in there is a great water crossing, it was so much fun. The walk through the gorge was magnificent, and the weather was absolutely perfect. The walk was a bit more difficult, climbing over lots and lots of rocks and through creek beds. We loved every second of it.
We made it to Half Way Pool, to proceed further you had to swim across the pool, then climb up the big boulder that is blocking the stream. We decided Half Way Pool was far enough. Brig, Liam, Scotty and I got in for a swim, and it was so refreshing. Gorgeous little spot. Scotty decided to climb up the boulder to see what was on the other side. Of course after seeing their dad up there, Liam and Brig, had to try it too. They both managed to make it up. They are so determined.
Day 30 El Questro
During the kids exploring this morning they found a Western Brown Snake eating a cane toad… total discovery channel moment.
We headed to Branco Lookout to have a look over the station. 4WD track to get in that is quite steep and challenging. There were two very rocky water crossings, where we found a baby freshwater crocodile basking in the sun on a rock, once we got a bit closer he slid back into the water. The lookout itself was incredible. It is right above a bend in the River. Just beautiful. On the return trip the croc was back on his perch, he was so stinking cute. We also managed to spot 2 goanna’s on the way back through. They were huge.
We then made our way up to Saddleback Ridge Lookout to watch the sunset. Another creek crossing, but this time we got to follow a cheeky bull across the crossing. Liam of course thought this was amazing because we got to look at his butt the entire time. 4WD track up to the lookout that is very steep, and we had some fun 4WDing.
Sunset was incredible.
Day 31 El Questro
Up early for another swim in Zebedee Springs to start the day. This place is so relaxing.
Next up we headed to Emma Gorge. Wow what a magnificent spot. Once you are in the water is incredible and there are a few little areas where hot springs trickle into the pool. The view..... oh my gosh..... incredibly gorgeous!!!! I’m not sure anything is going to top it. Loved every second of it and the swim was so refreshing! Kids struggled with the cold water.
Scotty wanted to have a little drive further along Gibb River Road so we drove about 10km down the Gibb to have a little look. Breathtaking scenery and I can’t wait to come back.
The homestead put on a movie night for the kids on the lawn. The kids all took over their chairs and some popcorn and watched Madagascar. It was so cute to watch them all.
Day 32 Elquestro to Bungle Bungles (Spring Creek Rest Area)
Beautiful scenery from El Questro through to Spring Creek. Some of the most breathtaking roadside scenery we’ve had.
Stopped at Spring Creek Rest area outside of the Bungle Bungles about 2pm and had a very relaxing afternoon. Kids did some homework and they collected some firewood. They got a great fire going with Scotty.
Day 33 Bungle Bungles
Up early to get a good start on the Bungle Bungles. Road in was in great condition. Much better than it was 20+ years ago when Scotty did it with his family. It was graded the entire way in.
Stopped at a spot to take some photographs and Liam decided pulling bark off a tree was a good idea and found a big spider. He then decided to poke it with a stick.....OMG it was freaking massive!!!!! We suspect it could be a wolf spider... I was freaking out.
We did the walk to the Piccaninny Lookout.
The walk was gorgeous, but hard work. We then continued back along the path to Cathederal Gorge, WOW absolutely incredible. What a spot. We spent quite a bit of time here just taking it all in.
I think we were hesitant to leave the Cathederal because it was so cool in there and so hot back on the path. Next stop was The Domes walk. Made it in and it was gorgeous. As we started to walk out Liam almost stepped on a whip snake.... Absolutely gorgeous snake, venomous, and of course I was freaking out.
Headed up to the northern section of the Bungle Bungles.
Echidna Chasm was incredible!!!!!
The Bungle Bungles are amazing!
Day 34 Spring Creek to Fitzroy Crossing
Huge day of driving today. Stopped in Halls Creek for groceries and fuel.
We stopped at Fitzroy River Lodge Caravan Park.
Day 35 Fitzroy Crossing to Derby (Free camp 100km out of Derby)
Headed out to Geikie Gorge this morning to have a little look around. We were amazed at the flood levels marked on the information centre. We worked out that 1993 (when Scotty was last here) was a major flood that year. Hence why Scotty was so surprised there was no water in the creek crossings at Bungle Bungles.
Long boring drive to Derby. I edited almost the entire way. Made it to Derby, and headed to the pier. Amazing to watch the tide come in. Met some lovely families that are both doing a lap of Australia for a year. Grabbed some ice-creams before we jumped back in the car. Stopped in at the Prison Boab Tree.
Pulled into our Free camp, Nilibubbica Rest Area, just as the sun set and it was completely packed. Luckily we snuck into a spot in the back.
Headed to Broome tomorrow for our Holiday within our Holiday. Can’t wait.
